September notes

Seasonal notes from Puddle Cottage: September 25

September feels very much the start of Autumn and not the end of Summer. In a year when everything has been early, I still feel unprepared for the loss of hot afternoons seeking shade in the hammock and long evenings sitting out in the garden watching the bees go about their business.

I relax in the outdoor bath and can hear a squirrel noisily feasting on cobnuts. Something disturbs the moment and from my viewpoint I enjoy tracking its journey: first leaping across from one stand of hazels to the other, swiftly balancing along the same exact oak bough and cherry branch it uses every day. Probably the same route used by generations of foraging squirrels.

And so the season turns and every creature goes about its annual routines...some gathering cobnuts for a dark winter day and some gathering up their Summer dreams, burying them in the warmed soil and trying not to forget where they put them.
